On Rusalka Week, she surfaces — a flower crown of chamomile on her hair, a song in a language you almost recognize.
You walk the riverbank and feel watched. You turn. You see half a face above the waterline. You realize she has been watching for some time.
A water spirit from pre-Christian Slavic mythology. The drowned brides of Eastern European folk belief — worshipped before the churches arrived, and feared long after. Offerings of bread and cloth are still left at certain rivers in Belarus, Ukraine, and western Russia. The river accepts them.
