The last night of April. The witches ride to the Brocken peak, where the horned one holds court and the bonfires burn until sunrise.

The villagers below lock their doors. They carve crosses into the lintels. They light fires of their own — for protection, and because some of them would rather be on the mountain.

In the Harz mountains of Germany, the tradition survives. The fires are now tourism. The bonfires on other hills, in other villages, in other countries — those are harder to explain.
