She Who Waits by the Stove
She lives behind the stove. She unravels what you wove. She tangles the threads, sits on your chest at night, and spins in the dark when the house is asleep.
You wake and your weaving has been undone. You find threads where threads should not be. You hear something that is not the wind.
Leave her bread. Do not sweep the corners after dusk. Do not speak her name aloud after the sun goes down.
A household spirit from Russian and Belarusian folklore — one of the oldest preserved female spirits of domestic folk belief. Appearing as a small hunched figure with tangled hair, she haunts the intimate spaces of peasant homes. Sleep paralysis in many Slavic villages was her work, not neurology.
